Working with Transgender Clients

This workshop on working with transgender clients includes guest speakers from the transgender community, as well as film presentations.  If you want to learn about how to best understand and support your transgender clients, this is a great way to do it. This class has useful information for anyone who works in a mental health or social services capacity.

You will learn a vocabulary of transgender terms, and basic information about the effects of hormones.  We will discuss issues that may come up in therapy, and the intersection between sex, gender and sexual orientation. In addition, we will talk about youth and intersex issues, as well as case vignettes.  I will also review the established guidelines for obtaining hormones or surgery (the Standards of Care).  You will receive a resource list of some of the main local transgender organizations, as well as a bibliography.

Previous participants said they found it easy to ask questions and interact with each other in the comfortable, informal atmosphere, and called the workshop organized, informative, very clear and helpful.

If you already have a significant background with transgender issues, and are looking for further training, check out the Advanced Transgender Workshop or the Advanced Transgender Study Group.  If you register for any two transgender trainings, you can deduct $5 from the second seminar.
